Consulate experience varies enormously: NYC was praised for compassionately scheduling a family of six within a two-day window (Feb 2025 confirmations for June appointments), while LA applicants reported a month+ of silence after submitting complete packages. Ask recent applicants about YOUR consulate before planning.
Expect two or more years from application to decision — pandemic-era applicants reported open-ended waits with little acknowledgment. The community treats 2+ years as the baseline, not the worst case.
Croatia's distinctive requirement is proving PERMANENT EMIGRATION — ship manifests, port records, foreign death certificates. Build that evidence before anything else. And verify the ancestor never moved back: a grandparent who returned to Croatia permanently disqualified one applicant's line.
Name anglicization (Marko/Marco) dominates worried first posts, but consistent supporting documents plus a family tree handle it — don't pre-emptively "fix" names. Real traps instead: state-restricted "No Record Found" letters (Ohio may require probate-court involvement) and letting the 6-month FBI background check expire before submission.
The killer disqualifier people miss: an ancestor who relocated within Yugoslavia (or to another ex-Yugoslav republic) rather than "abroad" fails Article 11 — as does leaving after October 8, 1991. Ethnic-minority ancestors from Croatian territory raise Article 11 vs Article 16 questions the community debates case-by-case.
A planning figure from the community: roughly $1.5–2k all-in for a family (documents, apostilles, Croatian translations, fees) going DIY. Fee confusion at consulates is routine — confirm amount and payment method by email before your appointment.
Post-approval, the paperwork sequence matters: domovnica (citizenship certificate) → Croatian birth certificate → passport → ID. Booking a passport appointment before the domovnica exists costs months. Emigrants born pre-1991 should not apply from within Croatia — it can undermine their "emigrant" status.
