BVA processing for StAG §5 declarations runs ~10 months to 2.5 years in documented reports: 8 months (Nov 2021→Jul 2022), ~20 months (May 2022→Mar 2023), 34 months with missing-document complications, and a mother-line case at ~2.4 years. Plan for 1.5–2.5 years of silence — silence is normal, not rejection.
Submit directly to the BVA in Cologne where possible — consulate routing adds months and consulates cannot see or influence BVA progress. And follow the community mantra: provide every document the requirements list (EER) names; missing documents were the single biggest cause of multi-year delays.
The core set: the German ancestor's birth certificate and naturalization records (or proof of non-naturalization), the full chain of birth/marriage certificates with certified translations, and an FBI check. US agency retrieval takes 3–6+ months — start there, track everything in a spreadsheet, and keep copies of all correspondence (typos and lost paperwork happen).
Germany's 2024 reform allows dual citizenship generally, removing the old retention-permit anxiety. The §5 declaration window for gender-discrimination cases (e.g. German mother pre-1975) runs until August 2031 — generous but finite.
