The community's first question is always: did your line break, or not? If Hungarian citizenship transmitted automatically down your line, "citizenship verification" confirms it with NO language requirement. Only broken lines need simplified naturalization and its Hungarian-language interview — analyze the route before starting language lessons.
The simplified-naturalization language check is a conversation, not a certificate exam — but people do fail it, and reports say expectations have drifted stricter and vary by consulate (Vienna waived checks for verification cases; London emphasized them). Aim for solid conversational ability, roughly A2–B1, and confirm with your specific consulate.
US consulates estimate 8–12 months but nearly two years was reported by an Australian applicant, and the post-approval birth registration (needed before a passport) adds months more. A failed language interview meant a ~5-month wait before a second attempt.
For pre-Trianon ancestors, the records are usually NOT in Hungary: one applicant's great-great-grandfather's birth certificate came from Slovak archives. Ancestors from the former Kingdom of Hungary mean searching Slovak, Romanian, Serbian, or Ukrainian archives.
One complete, clean grandparent line can suffice — missing records for other branches did not disqualify applicants. Holocaust-era gaps (1940s Budapest marriages, post-war records) are a known problem, and archives sometimes reject requests without explanation, so build the strongest single line rather than a complete tree.
Applying inside Hungary took one applicant five office visits: appointment-only discovery, account creation, a rejected proof-of-address, a landlord-signed residence form, then a two-hour final review with re-taken photos. Bureaucratic iteration is normal — bring patience and, if you can, a Hungarian speaker.
