Poland citizenship: what applicants actually experienced

Real confirmation timelines run long: one applicant reported ~2.5 years from submission to decision, and in 2025 the Masovian voivodeship was reported working through applications filed in February 2024. Budget 1.5–2.5+ years, plus months more for birth-certificate transcription (umiejscowienie), PESEL, and the first passport.

The community has mapped Poland's chain-breaking rules in remarkable depth: Red Army service during WWII did not break the chain (2012 Supreme Administrative Court ruling), but continued post-war service could; Deutsche Volksliste groups I–II broke the chain while III–IV did not; and the 1951 Act stripped citizenship from certain ethnic minorities abroad with important exceptions. Military service records from the WBH (Central Military Archive) are often the decisive proof of the citizenship chain — and US-side records are frequently the slowest link, with NARA genealogy requests reported at a year+. Chase both from day one, through multiple channels in parallel.

Polish State Archives searches cost ~600 PLN (~$160); local researchers charge ~$35/hour (one Łódź researcher: ~$662 for 2–3 days of archive work); the military archive (WBH) turns requests around in about a month. Agency packages split document research (~$1,500) from application handling ($2,500+) — the community leans DIY plus a targeted local researcher.

After the confirmation decision, the real-life sequence is: transcribe your foreign birth/marriage certificates into the Polish registry (umiejscowienie), get a PESEL number, then apply for the passport — each with its own multi-month queue. Start the transcription immediately after the decision arrives. All foreign documents need sworn Polish translations; consulates sometimes do certified translations cheaper than private sworn translators.
