Spain citizenship through a great-grandparent
Unlike Poland or Italy, Spanish law does not scale its descent provisions indefinitely. Article 20 reaches only a parent, and Article 22.2 — the broadest ancestry-based option — reaches no further than a grandparent. A great-grandparent connection does not open either route, however well documented.
Article 20 is limited to a parent; Article 22.2's own text ("padre o madre, abuelo o abuela") stops at grandparent — neither extends to a great-grandparent.
The Ley de Memoria Democrática route covered children and grandchildren of an exiled Spaniard, and is closed to new filers regardless of generational depth.
One route is worth checking independently of this ancestor at all: Article 22.1 gives a 2-year reduced-residency route to anyone who is a national by origin of an Ibero-American country, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal, or of Sephardic origin — this has nothing to do with how many generations back your Spanish ancestor is.
Check Article 22.1 independently — it runs on your own current nationality or Sephardic origin, not on this ancestor's generation.
If no Article 22.1 basis exists, this specific ancestral line does not currently open a route to Spanish citizenship.
