Croatia citizenship through a parent

Usually eligible

A Croatian-citizen parent generally means you already hold citizenship by descent — registration rather than naturalization. For emigrant-parent cases, Article 11 applies with no language requirement.

The Rules That Decide It

  • Direct descent from a Croatian citizen: register in the Croatian birth registry.

  • Emigrant lines: Article 11 requires the ancestor to have permanently emigrated before October 8, 1991 — to somewhere outside Yugoslavia.
